Your heart is one of the most important organs in your body. It pumps blood to every part of the body. Ensuring your heart works well is important to your health. February is the month of love, but it is also American Heart Month. Disease of the heart is the leading cause of death in the United States. One in every three deaths is caused by heart disease or stroke. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, in an average year more than 40,000 Illinoisans will die of heart disease. Heart disease is also a major health problem for women. More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. That is why it is so important to love your heart. Here are a few ways you can help your heart stay healthy:

  • Eat Healthy! A good diet is a key part of keeping your heart healthy. Make sure to eat lean meats such as fish and chicken, and stay away from fatty foods. Also eat a lot of leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale.
  • Get active! Exercise will get your heart pumping, which is good for this muscle. It is important to consult a doctor before starting a new exercise routine.
  • Put out those butts! Smoking cigarettes increases your risk of heart disease and other illnesses. If you need help quitting, we can help! Contact us to learn more about our smoking cessation program.
  • Know your numbers! When you go to the doctor, make sure to get tested for cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index. Need a catchy way to remember? Take a look at this music video done by the Mayo Clinic.

These are just a few ways to make sure that red muscle of yours stays healthy. It is important to go to your doctor for routine checkups. Your doctor can tell you if you are at risk for heart disease, and what to do to improve your heart health. If you currently have a heart condition, the most important thing you can do is follow your doctor’s instructions and take your medication regularly.
